International Ladies Lunch – Din Tai Fung Raffles Plaza Singapore
So here we are. The beginning of the SEAsian chapter of Ladies wot Lunch. Or colloquially Radies who Runching.
I missed the first excursion to this dumpling mecca when the crew went on a massive KL/Thailand run over Christmas NY’s 2008/09. I was about to make ammends…
I went to Singapore to pretty much eat. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit disappointed that I was only bringing one extra stomach with me, instead of the combined eating power of Lady Date and Lady Baggins.
But if I’m to be totally honest, I was taken aback by the eating prowess of Lady Frenchy whom I ended up taking. Had it not been for the fact that both of us had “jobs” to get back to, I’m pretty sure we’d both still be eating the Little Dragon Dumplings that they made fresh to order.
OK. So we went back two times after that. OK I’m lying. We went three times.
I LOVE THOSE LITTLE TINY MORSELS OF JOY. I NEED THEM IN MY MOUTH, NOW NOW NOW!!
Recommended? YES. HELL YES!
Eat some now.
Tanpopo and Scents of Taste
At the request of the First Lady, we headed for Tanpopo in Mt Lawley for some Japanese comfort food. Cheap and cheerful. The Champion of the Ladies tried the normally prohibitive Unagi (smoked eel) which was truly yum. Also the Edamame (green soy beans) were a nice colour offset for the white rice. Then it was off to Scents of Taste on Walcott Street (next to Savini and the spectacle shop) for a naughty cake or two. Lemon Meringue was ok, but not outstanding. The tarte au framboise (raspberry tart) is always a winner there. The coffee’s so so to dégueulasse (disgusting) but the French arguably have a style of coffee making peculiar to them. Whatever floats your boat. I prefer the Italian style of coffee around the corner at Cantina where they’re kicking some serious goals in this area!
Tanpopo 4/5
Scents of Taste
Desserts 4/5

Delizioso & Boucla (Lady Liscious’ Review)
Delizioso: Awesome. Loved the super-crispy undercrust that somehow morphed into soft dough within its .3cm thickness. Loved the potato & bacon pizza, loved the speed and simplicity of this place. Staff were also good about getting us wineglasses at lunchtime and letting us take over the street. I never eat my crusts when eating pizza (I reckon they are pointless carbs). I ate my crusts. Loved the chance to have a few different pizza flavours without having to buy entire pizzas. Wish they had tobasco tho.
PS: had 2005 Willow Bridge Sauvignon Blanc with lunch. That’s right – a 4 year old white wine. Still displayed freshness and vibrancy and lovely lingering complexity. Winner of a wine.
5 pieces of prosciutto/5
Boucla was sinful – the most incredible chocolate cake I’ve ever had; rich chewy exterior, soft gooey interior with incredible rich icing topped with pistachios. Awesome coffee. Loved the little moroccan-feel outdoor atrium.
5 large pieces of turkish delight/5

Delizioso Pizzeria and Boucla Coffee Lounge – Subiaco
Blah blah blah…cock balls…blah blah blah…oh my god…blah blah blah…take me now…blah blah blah nice prosciutto. More words here…
AWESOME/5
I would go back to both Delizioso and Boucla for the simple fact that although he has nothing to do with either of those places, BK is heroic.
Signed off with your Lady designation.

There are only a handful of individuals that would find this particular review amusing, so read on and see what Lady Luke had to say about these two eateries. Perhaps a little more coherent than mine…

Perth Winter. Alfresco Dining. World class, award winning pizza.

Post LL Coffee. Laneway intimacy at Boucla.
Devlin’s Cigar Lounge – Subiaco
This is usually where the aftermath of the Ladies Lunch takes place. In a smoke and testosterone filled lounge in the back room of WA’s only cigar divan.
I don’t smoke, drink or do drugs. Nor do I drink coffee or energy drinks. I sometimes wonder what I have in common with the people I hang out with. They must love me for my endless charm and sparkling repartee.
Cigars. Beautiful rich aromas. Bold taste. Cool factor goes all the way to 11. I do enjoy sucking a fatty after the trials of a full on LL, but I am seriously struggling these days to suck back a big boy in its entirety.
5 Romeo’s for 5 Juliette’s…it helps that Devlin’s has monopolised the market for exclusive, indoor, high end cigar smoking in Perth…
Me member. Me go back. (Yoink! Thanks PJ!!)

The Court Wine Bar – Northbridge
Just like our Macedonian mothers all used to make…
I went into this place expecting a relic throw back from a bygone era. What I got was a relic throw back from a bygone era.
The decor remains unchaged from when it was built back in the early 1700’s when King Richard invaded lower Macedonia and sacked Constantinople (which is now Istanbul). And according to these facts I just made up, this means The Court Wine Bar has an awesome menu that produces awesome food.
I had the Beef Goulash, just like my Macedonian Mom used to make. Mash taters and pickled cabbage had me blaming the dog for days.
The Court Wine Bar (not to be confused with the Court Hotel. Well it can be, but there are less lesbians. Same amount of fruity fancy boys though. Luke, I was not referring to you. Dayton, Alex, I was also not referring to you) gets a 4 out of 5.
I would return for the food. I love homecooked, rustic style food. I bet there a 3 or 4 Nonna’s out the back, with turkey arms and hair nets cooking the food for the day.

Zen Sushi – Subiaco
agaaa-dashi dashi dahi, push wasabi, shake a tree…
Zen Sushi was pretty beige for me.
I liked the fact that I could put food in my mouth, chew it and it sated my appetite. Which can be large. It also made me wonder why I spent $40 on each bound menu for The Ellington, when I could have gotten away with a $2 multi-page binder from Big W.
I had chicken katsu. It was a substantial meal. And it had more flavour than other japanese food that has no flavour.
It gets a 2.75 out of a possible 5. I did not leave the dining experince with any negative feelings.
I would go there if I couldn’t get to Hanami, Tan Po Po, Nine Fine Foods, Tsunami, Cinema City Jaws (which is a moot point now), any sushi joint in Sydney, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong or Japan. Not too bad, really…

West End Deli – West Perth
Bell End Deli?
Hell YES.
Wicked awesome food. More space than most deli’s of its ilk. Indoor willy wagtails scaring the poopens out of Angel (you LOSER!).
This place had everything. The menu is so non-Perth. It’s adventurous but familiar. I think there was something that was cooked in blood. Maybe. It sounded gross but I bet it tasted like the tears from Baby Jesus.
I had some gourmet pie and sausage roll thingy. I like trying standards of places that have whacky food before trying the whacky stuff.
I give it 4sies.
I’ve already been back for breakfast. Yoink!

The Cabin – Mount Hawthorn
I’ve always wanted a place to eat Eggs Benedict at lunchtime. And also one that had a giant moose head as it’s champion. And that was local to Perth.
Luckily ye olde The Cabin opened its sunlit doors. I had eaten here before and sampled the Wagyu Beef burger. It was like there was a party in my mouth and everyone was not only invited, but brought their fatty, beer fed cattle pets to slaughter and ingest.
The LL meal of poached eggs covered in egg sauce did not disappoint either. Having steered clear of restaraunt bought eggs benno since nailing the recipe in my own kitchen, I was eager to try a new outlet. The sauce was sharp and potent, the chef (cook?) using vinegar rather than lemon.
I like.
Cool digs, great alfresco area (how on earth did they get the Town of Vincent to approve this?) and attractive menu offerings.
3.5 moose heads.
In future I eat more there. Yum.
